population
The region
of
Veliko Turnovo is located in the north central part of Bulgaria. This
area is 4 666, 691km2, that is 4.2% of the area of the country. The
population is 294 668 people is 3.6% of the population of the country.
Veliko Turnovo region is comprised of 10 municipalities and 336 villages.

higher than the average in the country. The whole phone-density in the region is 97.11 /number of
phones for 100 households/. The average for the country is 84.64. As a whole
the index of digital technology in the region is also higher than the
country one.
There are
5 hydroelectric stations and 3 thermo-electric stations i the area but they
are not sufficient to cover the energy needs. As a result, National energy
resources are used. he north branch of the National Gas pipe line passes
through the territory of the region of Veliko Turnovo. All of Bulgaria is undergoing renovations in how
gas is distributed to homes and industries. The region of Veliko Tarnovo has
a good public-water-supply network. The main water reservoir is the dam "Iovkovtsi",
which provides water even to the neighbouring regions. A prerequisite
for companies invested in introducing investments and technologies is that
the network needs to be repaired in some parts and some new drainage pipes
are also needed. Overall the drainage network is well-constructed and this
prevents it from polluting the environment. Purifying stations for the
drained water in the municipalities are in process of being set up. For
example a Swage Regional Purifying station for the cost of is
being built to serve the needs of the towns of Gorna Oriahovitsa and
Liaskovets

Logistics-roads, railroads, airports
The regional
road network is long - 1599 km - that is 4.4% of the whole road network of
the country. Its density is higher than the average of the entire country.
The
geographic location of the region of Veliko Turnovo in one of the crossroads
in Bulgaria and the Balkans. Most traffic from North of Europe to South West
Europe, Turkey and the Middle East and vice versa passes through the
area.
Along the
West-East route through the region is the national highway "Hemus"
connecting Sofia and
Varna.
One of the
most important advantages of the traffic infrastructure of the region is the
international airport in the town of Gorna Oriahovitsa. It works non-stop
and with state-of-the-art equipment. It takes in cargo, passenger and
charter flights from all over the road.
The huge
railway junction in Gorna Oriahovitsa is of national significance for the
Republic railway traffic and the International Railway Corridors, passing
through the region. Here, the European road E-680 /Sofia-Varna/ and a part
of the E-95 /Rouse- Gorna Oriahovitsa- Podkova/, are crossing each other.

These roads
are categorized in the European agreement for combined transport. The whole
length of the railway network is 288km- that is 6.7% of the whole railway
network of the country. To the north, the region of Veliko Turnovo borders
with the river Danube. The port of the town of Svishtov is built on the
southern side of the river and is the main port for the region as it
connects Bulgaria with the countries situated on the Central Danube
(Hungary, Austria and Germany). The port provides inexpensive, ecological
traffic of long-distance mass cargoes and boat trips along the Danube for
tourists and birdwatchers.
The distance from
Sofia Airport to Veliko Turnovo is 250 km. and from
Gorna Oryahovitsa Cargo Airport to Veliko Turnovo -only 7 km .
Education
The
municipality of Veliko Turnovo is the biggest one by geographic size and
population in the region, therefore it is an educational, cultural, tourism
and historical centre. It boasts with of the on largest university in
Bulgaria- "St. St. Cyril and Methodious". There are courses in
humanities, economics and informational technologies. Veliko Turnovo
University is a member of the Association of the European Universities, the
International Association of Universities and the Eastern European University
network. It is connected with some related |

universities
in France and the University "Friedrich Schiller" of Yen, Germany.

Resources
Tourism is
one of the most significant trends in the economy of the country and
Veliko Turnovo and the region has a rich combination of prerequisites
for tourism development: remarkable nature and land shaft , historical and
cultural memorials, unique architecture, many monasteries, temperate
climate, mineral springs and hunting farms.
